Week 8 Youtube

This library workout video was very cleverly done. Although much of the "exercise equipment" is outdated, it is something that could be easily updated to be relevant. I think it could be a little shorter and of course when this video was made ('80's) there wasn't the worry of being politically correct as there is today. It looks like it was fun for the staff to do!

This clip of Super Librarian would be a great advertisement for the library for kids or teens who are into comics or graphic books! It could be a series of ads involving different parts of the collection that the branch wanted to highlight. I like the fact that it is short and catchy.

I think TPL could use more video clips to explain services and programs. The information would be more interesting and could be quite creative. YAG groups could be commissioned to create some clips for various program promotions for all ages.

I like the variety of clips found on Youtube. I am happy to learn how I can share any gems that I find!

Podcasting

I have listened to interviews and programs on podcasts from my favourite sites but I had no idea there was such a vast collection of them in one place! I subscribed to three that caught my fancy right away but I could have (and still may ) subcribed to many more. The three I settled on were
a) Golden Oldies Entertainment (Old Time Radio) because I love hearing the old radio shows from the past.

b) Pottercast: A Harry Potter Podcast because I am a big Harry Potter fan.
c) Movies You Should See - just because I was curious.

I am fascinated by this tool and will likely be looking at more of the podcasts on other sites more closely.

23 Things - Online Office Tools

Wow! I am constantly amazed in this workshop at the amount of tools and functions that are available online! This latest one of office tools online is really a great find. A while ago I was involved with the YAG group in our branch who were creating a newsletter to be published for the branch. There were many contributors and the editor (a YAG) was becoming overwhelmed with the volume of emails and contributions. This tool would have made life for her and me much easier and more fun!

Outside of work I can see it being useful for the various committees I am a member of, especially when a joint group project is being considered.

This is one tool I will definitely be finding useful.

Was it Delicious?

I must admit I had no idea what "Delicious" was until I took this course! I can see it being a useful tool if you were someone who worked on multiple computers and/or a blackberry because all of your useful and interesting bookmarks would be in one place on the internet. However I tend to only need certain bookmarks at work and different ones at home so I don't think this tool would be as useful to me. I found that many of the sites I liked and used were also accessed by a large number of other users. So maybe I am not as creative or innovative as I thought I was! Nevertheless it was interesting to know that such an internet tool exists and that I was able to master it quite easily.

Assignment #4 Time For Some Fun!

I chose to try and make a picture mosaic in the Big Huge Labs site. This assignment was an interesting experiment in finding photos that were compatible and interesting to look at.
The first one was with cats and the second one was with flowers.

Cats are always interesting to look at as they have an expression of
either boredom or curiousity. These pictures have an example of both of those feelings.

I was really pleased at how well these pictures fit together. All are very different flowers but they seem to compliment each other well.

I also tried out the Generators. Some were really interesting. Two that I found to be fun were the Band Name Generator and the Clippy Office Assistant Generator.

For the Band name Generator I put in the word "Librarian" and lo and behold out of the many names that were displayed, two caught my eye: "Librarians of the Mind" and "Librarian Baby and the Fantastic Barcodes"! Maybe for the next talent show...

The Clippy Office Assistant has you put "helpful" tips into a bubble that would supposedly pop up and assist you in Word. This was fun but not very resourceful!

23 Things Assignment # 3

I have now conquered adding RSS feeds to a reader and must admit this is a very cool time saver! I never knew what that symbol/RSS meant and now I do! I like having my favorite web pages handy for viewing. The three I decided to use for the Bloglines were:
CBC Top Stories -News
EW.com Today's Latest Headlines
People.com Latest News

I see how this feature could be used for work purposes if you needed to be constantly up to date on the latest issues in the world. But I would use this feature for leisure reading. There is a lot of information to browse through and although the articles are compressed for easy viewing, you still need time to scroll through and choose the ones of interest.

I would probably want these RSS feeds added to a web page(such as Google) or directly to my blog rather than having to open a specific viewer like Bloglines.

23 Things Assignment #2

There is nothing quite as serene as watching butterflies dance from flower to flower. They seem so light and elegant as they float on the breeze. They are a true sign of summer.

The moon seems to be saying farewell
as it drifts through the night.

What can I say--they are just sooo cute!
